Reisma Van den Burg Grant

Whooho I’ve been awarded the Reisma Van den Burg Grant! This grant is named after the Frisian painter Cor Reisma (1902-1962) and is offered by his family. The biennial stipend is intended to give recent graduates from the Minerva Art Academy an opportunity to further develop their work through an (inter)national project.

Stay tuned for my developments, as I will start to collaborate with the international Media Art collective Videokaffe!

The photo, by Harma Kaput, shows the three winners of Minerva Art Academy awards: Vassilena Petrova, Jip de Beer and Antonia Oana. I’m holding an artwork by Jos Volkers, which has been given to me as part of the award.

(RE)DISCOVER STOCKHOLM

The Groningen based projectspace SIGN invited me to make new work and show it at the Supermarket Art Fair in Stockholm. A nice opportunity to see this highly digitised society. Research from the European Commission shows the Swedish people use the internet more than citizens from other countries. So, they are familiar with web pages. But I wanted to give them a new perspective on the seemingly familiar concept of web pages: web pages as three-dimensional buildings. We are used to viewing web pages from above. With Web Spaces I transforms the underlying architecture of web pages into three-dimensional spaces. The…

Web Choreographies

Web Choreographies is a live coding performance in the web browser by Joana Chicau and Jip de Beer. Together they co-choreograph the path of the performance, engaging in various visual displays, glitches and interactions between HTML elements and web architectures.

New Manhattan: The Opening

Finally I was able to unveil New Manhattan! It will be exhibited until the 10th of February 2019 at Groninger Forum (Public Library), Oude Boteringestraat 18, 9712 GH Groningen. Approximately 70 curious people visited the opening and I really enjoyed watching them discover New Manhattan. Had some good talks, but the time flew by. I just wished I could have spoken with everybody. Before taking the cover off, I did say a few things about the project. Mainly to thank everybody involved. Thanks again! I also said that I’ve been investigating the architecture of webpages…

Invitation to the opening of New Manhattan

The crowdfunding campaign for New Manhattan was a succes! At the moment I’m still busy with 3D-printing the architecture of 60 webpages and finishing the interactive installation. But I’d already like to invite you for the opening of the exhibition. The opening takes place on Tuesday the 8th of January at 16:30 in Groningen. This is the best moment to come and see how the city turned out and meet all the participants. It’s also the moment, if all goes well, when the New Manhattan book will be launched. We’ll have some drinks and snacks and I’m looking forward to see…

Mediafestival Hoofddorp

Web Spaces was part of the Mediafestival exhibition at Galerie De Meerse in Hoofddorp. It’s the same installation I showed at TEC ART in Rotterdam. But this time, there were a lot of young visitors! Almost 1100 kids from primary and secondary schools in the region have had a tour through the exhibition, led by guides from the Rijksmuseum. They were told about the work, the artists and their intentions. Additionally there were activities for the young visitors, related to the artworks. For example the activity in relation to my golden Web Space was for each kid to make a…

New Manhattan/The Web Space Never Sleeps

With your help, I’m going to build New Manhattan: one big artwork that consists of several small artworks. It is a 3D-printed scale model of a fictional city based on the architecture of 100 web pages. And at the same time it’s a moment to pause at our digitized society that we have designed ourselves.

Check out the video and project page at Voordekunst. They are in Dutch only, so you may have to use a bit of Google Translate.

I hope you’ll claim your spot in New Manhattan!

A Virtual Village in Friesland

Kunstroute Open Stal is a tradition that’s been going on for decades. Every year the villagers organise an exhibition which shows artworks scattered throughout the small but lovely village of Oldeberkoop in Friesland. The people who live in Oldeberkoop know their village very well. But I’m happy I was able to provide them a new perspective on their village. Especially for this years edition, which has the theme of the New World, I made an interactive installation with three screens which show an alternate reality of the village. In the installation you visit the virtual buildings in Oldeberkoop: Web Spaces. This architecture…
